Travel Tips

Rome, the Eternal City, is an open-air museum where every corner tells centuries of history, culture, and art. Among its many treasures, the fountains hold a special place. These architectural masterpieces not only refresh the city with their clear water but also offer a visual spectacle that enchants both residents and tourists. In this article, we will explore some of the most beautiful and iconic fountains in Rome, each with its own unique history and charm.

Trevi Fountain

Let's begin our journey with the most famous of all: the Trevi Fountain. Located in the heart of the city, this Baroque fountain has become a symbol of Rome. Designed by Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini in 1762, the fountain depicts Neptune, the god of the sea, surrounded by tritons and sea horses. Legend has it that anyone who throws a coin into the fountain with their right hand over their left shoulder will surely return to Rome. Every day, thousands of people follow this ritual, contributing a considerable amount of money that is donated to charity.

Fountain of the Four Rivers

Located in the center of Piazza Navona, the Fountain of the Four Rivers is another masterpiece of Roman Baroque art. Designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1651, it represents the four great rivers of the continents then known: the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube, and the Río de la Plata. Each male figure representing a river is accompanied by animals and plants typical of their respective regions. At the center of the fountain stands an Egyptian obelisk, adding to the fountain's monumental and majestic appearance.

Fountain of the Boat (Fontana della Barcaccia)

At the foot of the Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna lies the Fountain of the Boat, a work by Pietro Bernini, father of the famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Completed in 1627, the fountain is shaped like a half-sunken boat and is inspired by a legend in which a boat was supposedly carried to this spot during a flood of the Tiber River. The low and wide shape of the fountain is an example of the ingenuity of the artists of the time, who had to deal with low water pressure in this area.

Triton Fountain

Piazza Barberini is home to the Triton Fountain, another work by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, created in 1643. The fountain depicts the sea god Triton, son of Neptune, blowing into a conch shell, causing water to gush forth. The sculpture is set on a group of four intertwined dolphins, which seem to lift Triton toward the sky. This Baroque masterpiece is an extraordinary example of Bernini's ability to combine movement and dynamism with impeccable artistic skill.

Turtle Fountain

Hidden in Piazza Mattei, in the Sant'Angelo district, the Turtle Fountain is a gem of late Renaissance Rome. Designed by Giacomo della Porta and completed by Taddeo Landini in 1588, the fountain features four youths helping turtles climb to the edge of the basin. The turtles, added in 1658 during a restoration by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, give the fountain a touch of elegance and originality. Legend has it that this fountain was built overnight to convince the father of a young noblewoman to grant his daughter's hand in marriage to her suitor.

Fountain of the Acqua Paola

Also known as "Er Fontanone," the Fountain of the Acqua Paola is located on the Janiculum Hill, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Rome. Built in 1612 at the behest of Pope Paul V, this fountain marks the arrival in Rome of water transported by the Trajan aqueduct, restored by Paul V himself. The imposing structure is decorated with columns, inscriptions, and papal coats of arms, and water flows from five large spouts, creating a suggestive spectacle. Its grandeur and location make it one of the most fascinating fountains in the city.

The fountains of Rome are not just sources of refreshment but true masterpieces that tell the story of a city that has harmoniously blended art, engineering, and legend. Each fountain has its own identity, a story that intertwines with the city's history and its inhabitants. Going to Rome without admiring its fountains means missing out on an essential part of its soul. So, the next time you stroll through the streets of the Eternal City, take a moment to listen to the sound of flowing water: it is the voice of Rome, telling you centuries of stories and beauty.
