Special Access Visit to the Roman Aqueduct from 19 B.C.: Water Engineering without End
JJJJ
How many mountains of water has the ancient Aqua Virgo aqueduct brought to Rome from 19 B.C. to today?
How many fountains has it made playful, how many men and women has it given to drink, how many of them over the centuries have taken care of its colossal arches and underground tunnels? How many children have smiled while splashing their faces with that water?
Liquid water, flowing and breaking, formless if not inside a container. Solid marbles, unyielding, planted in the ground to contain and endure. A virtuous combination, the engineering excellence of the Romans, their innovative and spectacular hydraulic enterprises for the time in which they were produced.
Discover with an experienced archaeologist, on this special access visit to the Aqua Virgo Aqueduct, the stories carved over the centuries on its millennial stone body, how it has crossed the centuries almost unscathed, ferrying its history and that of Ancient Rome to us, crystallized in myth, in the proliferation of legends.
Travel through history exploring this exclusive archaeological site open only for you for an entire hour. Approach this giant crushed between modern buildings, halfway between the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, with its base underground - the street level of Ancient Rome is meters below the current one - and the solemn arches about 6 meters high for a length of about 15 meters.
Walk along the top of this intact portion of the aqueduct, observe closely the grass emerging from the joints of the travertine blocks, listen to the flow of water inside it, follow its course on the ground plan until it flows into the Trevi Fountain, grasping the secret ingenuity that fuels its enchantment (flanked by greedy tourists eager for photos).
